Dear Senator [Insert your senator’s last name]:
My name is [Insert your full name] and I reside in [Insert your state].
I am writing to you regarding the issue of brain-machine interface technology, and the upcoming plans by some corporations to have brain-tech implants mass produced and mass marketed to the general public. My suggestion is that the U.S. Senate consider passing legislation that bans these types of imbedded devices.
The implants are being hyped as providing the capability for instant learning; instant memory; cures for some neurological disorders; and calling up the Web in one’s mind. However, upon further inspection, they strongly resemble smartphones, each with a Bluetooth, a processor, and a wireless charger. Brainphones, so to speak.
Smartphones, along with the social media they facilitate, are currently causing dramatic psychological and physiological harm to humans, especially young people. Dr. Jean Twenge’s research at San Diego State University, as one example, is compelling, tying the devices to an increase in suicide, poor sleep habits, and declining health. Smartphones and social media also tend to be highly addictive. With implants, the tendency for humans to always be “on” and always be connected is frightening. The stress and trauma currently brought on by smartphone use might increase dramatically.
The United States could lead the world in protecting its citizens, particularly its young people, from these devices. Strong legislation banning the implants would make a big difference.
Thank you for considering my request. And thank you for your public service to this great nation.
Sincerely,
